What is kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an age-appropriate form of BJJ that introduces children to a grappling-based martial art built around technique, leverage and control. Unlike striking martial arts, BJJ primarily takes place through clinching and ground-based positions, where students learn how to move, maintain or escape positions and respond to an opponent’s movements.
In our kids BJJ programs, these concepts are introduced progressively through demonstrations, partner practice, drills and supervised activities appropriate to each age group. Rather than simply memorising individual moves, children begin learning how different positions connect and how to make decisions when a training partner reacts differently than expected.
Benefits of BJJ for children
One of the distinctive benefits of BJJ is that it gives children problems to solve while they’re physically active. A training partner won’t always move or respond in the same way, so children gradually learn to assess a position, remember what they’ve practised and adjust their approach.
Regular kids’ BJJ training can also give children an opportunity to become comfortable with learning through trial and error. A sweep might not work the first time, they may lose a position or they might need to try a different technique. With guidance from their coaches, these moments become part of the learning process.
BJJ also provides clear opportunities to recognise progress. As children become more familiar with positions and techniques, they can see skills that once felt difficult gradually become more manageable. This can encourage patience and a positive attitude towards learning new challenges.

Accessible classes
Martial arts is an excellent way to teach your child the fundamentals of self-defence and discipline, but sometimes you may find that it is difficult to find the time for your child’s extracurricular activities. That is why we are proud to offer our kids BJJ classes at multiple times and days during the week. We understand that your life as a parent is busy, so we are here to help.
Furthermore, we will be opening online training classes that include kids’ martial arts training. That way, your child can reach their full potential even if training in person is difficult or impossible. At Team Perosh, we want to break down the barriers of who can and cannot learn mixed martial arts in and around Sydney.
Finally, your child can try our classes for one week absolutely free — no strings attached. Fill out our online contact form to begin your child’s lessons today.
Getting started with kids BJJ
Your child doesn’t need previous martial arts experience or existing knowledge of BJJ to begin. Their first sessions are an opportunity to become familiar with the coaches, class format, basic terminology and what it’s like to train with a partner.
Before attending, check the timetable for an age-appropriate session and ask our team what your child should wear or bring. Arriving a little early can also give first-time students time to settle in and become familiar with their surroundings before class begins.
Most importantly, encourage your child to approach their first few sessions with curiosity. Nobody is expected to master Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu immediately; learning comes gradually through instruction, repetition and time on the mats.
What to expect in our BJJ classes for kids in Sydney
Our programs for BJJ for kids provide a structured, engaging and supportive environment where children of all experience levels — from complete beginners to experienced young grapplers — can develop their skills. Each kid’s BJJ class follows a carefully designed curriculum to build confidence, discipline and technique step by step.
- Warm-ups and drills — Every session begins with dynamic warm-ups, including mobility exercises, agility drills and coordination-building movements. These activities improve balance, reaction time and body awareness, essential for mastering BJJ techniques.
- Technique instruction — Kids learn the core positions, escapes, submissions and transitions of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Instructors break down each technique into easy-to-follow steps, ensuring that young students understand and apply the movements effectively.
- Controlled sparring (rolling) — Under the close supervision of our expert coaches, kids engage in safe, structured sparring. This helps them apply techniques in real time, develop timing and problem-solving skills and gain confidence in a live training setting.
- Games and team exercises — To keep classes fun and engaging, we incorporate interactive games and partner-based drills that reinforce BJJ principles while building teamwork, focus and perseverance.
Kids progress at their own pace with positive reinforcement, encouragement and structured learning. We help them develop resilience, problem-solving abilities and self-confidence — on and off the mats.

FAQs
What age groups do you accept for BJJ kids’ classes?
Our Kids BJJ classes in Sydney are suitable for children ages 4 to 14. Classes are structured to match different age groups and experience levels, with each child receiving age-appropriate training and support.
Should I put my 4-year-old in Jiu-Jitsu?
Four can be an appropriate age to introduce a child to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, provided the program is specifically designed for young children. Team Perosh accepts children from age four, with training adapted to suit different ages and levels of experience.
At this age, the aim isn’t to rush technical development. Becoming comfortable following instructions, participating in group activities, working with a partner and learning basic movements can all be valuable parts of their introduction to BJJ. If you’re unsure whether your four-year-old is ready, a trial is a practical way to see how they respond to the class environment.
Is BJJ good for kids?
BJJ can be a rewarding activity for children who enjoy learning new skills, being active and working with others. Because training combines physical movement with technical problem-solving, children have opportunities to practise coordination, decision-making and persistence as they learn.
The right experience also depends on the individual child and training environment. At Team Perosh, kids BJJ is taught in structured, age-appropriate classes under the supervision of experienced coaches.
What should my child wear to their first BJJ class?
For their first kids BJJ class, make sure your child wears comfortable, fitted clothing that allows them to move freely and doesn’t have zips, buckles or other hard accessories. It’s also a good idea to bring a water bottle and ensure fingernails and toenails are trimmed before training.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids a safe sport?
Yes. Kids BJJ is a safe martial art that focuses on technique, control and strategy rather than strikes or impact. Our instructors ensure a closely supervised, structured and positive training environment where children learn safely.
Does my child need previous experience in martial arts?
No prior experience is required. Our BJJ classes for kids in Sydney accommodate complete beginners as well as experienced young grapplers. We provide step-by-step guidance to help every child progress at their own pace.
Does my child have to compete?
Competition is completely optional. While some kids enjoy the challenge of competing, others train for fitness, self-defence and personal growth. We support all students in achieving their own goals, whether that includes competition or not.
Can parents watch the classes?
Yes. Parents are welcome to observe kids’ BJJ classes and see their child’s progress. We encourage a supportive atmosphere, and you can be involved in your child’s martial arts journey.
Do you offer a free trial class?
Yes. We offer a 1-week free trial for all new students. This allows your child to experience BJJ for kids in Sydney, meet our instructors and see if it’s the right fit — all with no obligation.
What other classes do you offer?
Alongside Kids BJJ classes, we also offer Kids Muay Thai, where children learn striking techniques. For adults, we provide BJJ, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts, catering to all skill levels.
