Training 1

25 years Training 20 Years Coaching Part 5 of 5

Here is the 5th & final part of my journey of 25 years training & 20 years coaching.

Part 5 of 5: 2016 – 2020

In 2016 we changed our name to Team Perosh Mixed Martial Arts and in 2017 we moved to a 1000 square metre World Class Facility. All 450 students made the move and we have now grown to 600 members. Here are some highlights of what we have achieved the past 4 years.

  • 4 Gradings every year (2 in 2020)
  • Our MMA team have had 50 matches from 2016-2019 with a 70%-win rate
  • Our BJJ team have made 17 Pan Pacific, 21 Australian & 21 State Champions.
  • Our extended family have increased to 15 Team Perosh Affiliate academies.
  • Every year we participated in community events, charity fundraisers and had our Christmas party

In 2018 I made my return to BJJ Gi competition. I won my weight and open at the Australian BJJ Championships and then went to the World Masters BJJ Championships and won a bronze in my weight and gold (my first World title) in the open.

Instead of writing 2020 off I made the most of it. I rewrote all policy and procedures at Team Perosh, improved my staff and students’ skills and I learnt new life skills for myself in 2020!

There are so many people to thank over the past 25 years.

  • Thank you to Carlos Machado for being my BJJ coach, mentor and friend.
  • Thank you to my MMA coaching team including my Greg Jackson, Mike Winklejohn, Brandon Gibson & Chad Smith from Jackson-Wink, Steve Rudic, Denis Roberts & Paul Dallow.
  • Thank you to my staff (John, Oulah, Johnny & Ana) for helping me run everything smoothly
  • Thank you to all of my students (both past & present) for giving me the motivation. We are family. Everything I do is for you!
  • And thank you to my brother dad, mum, brother John, Step Kids Natasha & Damian and my wife Ana for their continue and unwavering support.

I hope you have enjoyed my journey. Thank you to everyone who liked, commented and shared my posts. I am looking forward to the next 25 years of training and coaching!

25 Years 6

25 years Training 20 Years Coaching Part 4 of 5

2020 is a big milestone year for me. It is 25 years since I started BJJ & Muay Thai Kickboxing training and 20 years since I started coaching. Here is the next part. Feel free to like, comment and share this post.

Part 4 of 5: 2003 – 2015

This time range symbolises the end of my BJJ competition career (from Gi competition) and my MMA competition career. I also grew my academy from 50 to 450 students including many BJJ & MMA State, National & Pan Pacific Champions.

I could have written 5 parts just for the year 2003. Here are the highlights:

  • I won a bronze medal at the 2003 World BJJ Championships as a Brown Belt.
  • Carlos Machado presented me with a BJJ Black Belt during my visit to Dallas, Texas after I won Bronze at the Worlds.
  • I competed at ADCC in Brazil. I competed 5 times in ADCC having won the South Pacific Trials to compete in the 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 & 2009 ADCC Championships.
  • I competed in the first BJJ Black Belt match in Australia at Bondi against Marcelo Rezende from Gracie Barra. I won 2-0.
  • I made my MMA debut in an 8-man tournament. I won 3 MMA fights in one night to win the tournament.

My MMA career spanned 12 years from 2003 to 2015 with a 15W 10L record including 5 wins in the UFC all by stoppage. Here are a couple of links you can look at more info and pics.

It has been my absolute pleasure to teach so many students both adults and kids in MMA, BJJ & Muay Thai Kickboxing. I am proud of every single one. I always post about my students on my website and social media after gradings, competitions and other events. Just scroll down this Facebook page and you can see what we have achieved together in just 2020. You can continue scrolling all the way back to 2007 too!

Tomorrow is Part 5: 2016 – 2020 which is the final part.

AP Part 3 - 5

25 years Training 20 Years Coaching Part 3 of 5

2020 is a big milestone year for me. It is 25 years since I started BJJ & Muay Thai Kickboxing training and 20 years since I started coaching. Here is the next part. Feel free to like, comment and share this post.

Part 3 of 5: 2000 – 2002

I wanted a career in martial arts. I started talking to coaches, academy owners, business people and started reading books about running a business. My favourite 2 books about running a business was “The E-Myth” and “How to run a small business for dummies”. You may laugh about that last book but it is actually a great all in one resource. I strongly recommend anyone wanting to run a small business to read the above two books.

I started teaching my first BJJ class in August 2000 at my first martial arts coach’s academy IMC in Kemps Creek run by Paul Zadro. I taught there every Friday until May 2002 when I opened up my full-time academy. In the first photo below two of the students Bren Foster and Dean Vella I presented BJJ Black Belts to and are still with me today!

In July 2001 John Simon moved to Melbourne and I took over teaching at the All-Souls Anglican church in Leichhardt. There were about 10 students when I took over. I built it up to about 50 students in May 2002. Not bad for a part time academy where we had to lay down and pull up the mats before and after every class. I remember the class after us was a “Clog dancing” class. Oh, they hated us. We were always late in finishing and packing up and after 2 hours of BJJ & Muay Thai we left them a nice musty sweat smell for them!

In May 2002 I opened up SPMA with Elvis Sinosic. I moved the Leichhardt and Kemps Creek locations to Concord and started running a full timetable 5 nights per week and 3 mornings per week. At the same time, I was still working a full-time job during the day and was a bouncer on the weekends. It was tough but I loved it!

Tomorrow is Part 4: 2003 – 2015.

Merry Christmas!

From everyone at Team Perosh Mixed Martial Arts we wish you and your families a Merry Christmas. Thank you to everyone who brought in an ornament for our tree. It was a great mix of traditional ornaments, home made ones including a Team Perosh logo made and some mini Panatones! Have a safe and great one.

Christmas party

Our great Christmas party

Team Perosh finished off the year with their annual Christmas party. It was held at the beautiful Concord Function Centre and we sold out the 150 maximum number allowed.

The night started with dinner, a video tribute for Coach Anthony, Trivia competition, Raffle and cutting of the cake.

Well done to the table that won the Trivia competition. They each won 1 month free training.

The video tribute was very unexpected and humbling and very emotional for me. This year marks 25 years training and 20 years of coaching for me. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the video and thank you to everyone who attended the party.

We raised $218.60 from the Raffle. Thank you to Knockout Nutrition for providing the prizes for our raffle. We donated the money raised to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. If you would like to donate yourself to this great cause please click on this link.

Sujan Creations was there to take all the photos. We have posted 10 beautiful photos here and will post more shortly. Click here for all the photos.

Finally, thank you to Oulah, Johnny, Nobby, John and my wife Ana for organising the Christmas party. You all rock!
