Team SPMA went 4 wins 4 losses in MMA matches held around Sydney, Wollongong, Blue Mountains, Canberra and Melbourne. Andrew Mills won 2 matches in September and November, Jeshua McPhail won in September and Bryce Spiteri won in November in the Blue Mountains. Steve Micallef and Gerhard Voigt both lost their title matches in the Brace MMA show on 22nd November in Canberra. And Byron Cowell lost both his matches in September in Wollongong and December in Melbourne.
I attended the opening of former Dragons star Matt Cooper’s opening of his new MMA gym in Wollongong on 2nd August. Matt Cooper played rugby league for 14 seasons with the St. George Dragons (who happen to be my favourite team!). Matt now wants to train and teach and also fight in MMA. It’s great to have him on the MMA team!
About 100 people came throughout the day and helped us celebrate the Grand Reopening of our Moorebank MMA, BJJ and Thai Kickboxing gym. The rain held out and everyone enjoyed the free BBQ, took a tour of our new gym and the kids enjoyed the free jumping castle. We had special guests Craig Kelly, MP who is the federal member for Hughes and the Mayor of Liverpool City Council Ned Mannoun who toured the gym, gave a speech to everyone there and even got down and dirty and took a few action shots. Macquarie Uni and Elite Martial Arts both had their gradings last week in Sydney. Macquarie Uni had BJJ and Thai Kickboxing gradings and Elite Martial Arts had BJJ gradings for adults and kids. Once again the students did great. A credit to them putting in the hard work and to my instructors for being great coaches.

One week of gradings just finished at SPMA with 200 students grading in BJJ and Thai Kickboxing across both of my Sydney gyms. Gradings started in Moorebank on Monday 31st March with Kids BJJ and Adults BJJ and the following night was Adults Thai Kickboxing. On Wednesday 2nd April at Concord was Kids BJJ (11-14yo) and Adults BJJ and on Thursday 3rd April was Kids BJJ (6-10yo) and Adults Thai Kickboxing. You can se photos below of all the classes.
I participated in an anti-bullying event called BRAVE on 22nd March. Anthony was joined by fellow UFC fighters BJ Penn, Urijah Faber, James Tehuna and Dylan Andrews. The event was to raise awareness and tackle ways to stop bullying. The event was held at the UFC gym in Sydney.
SPMA won an impressive 10 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals at the NSW BJJ Championships. SPMA had 35 students compete at the Sports and Aquatic Centre at Sydney Uni on 22nd March. Shaher Khan and Frances Bavaro deserve special mention for winning double gold!
SPMA went 2 wins 2 losses at the Brace for War MMA show at Luna Park in Sydney on 15th March. Gerhard Voigt won by KO 1st round, Steven Micallef won by decision, Luke Standing lost by TKO and Christoff Loff lost by decision. Usual ups and downs in the world of MMA. It was the first round of an 8 main tournament for each division. Gerhard and Steve now move to the semi finals to be held later in the year.
We moved our Liverpool MMA, BJJ and Muay Thai Kickboxing gym to Moorebank. We opened Monday 10th March at our new location. It is a much bigger and better place than our previous one. It has a much better training feel to it. All of the students are very happy with the move and new facilities. On top of that it is easy to get to and there is unlimited free parking. We will be having a Grand Reopening Day on Sunday 13th April.
